John barnes for forest acres city council

I want to represent Forest Acres on City Council. Vote for me on May 14.

I’m a novice to politics. I have never run for political office. But at a certain point in life, I think it’s important to participate, to lead, and make a difference in the lives of others.

  • Fresh Perspective—the council members seeking reelection have been serving for 16 and 22 years respectively. We are grateful for their service. However, it’s time for fresh ideas, fresh perspectives, and fresh eyes. It’s time to pass the baton.

  • Efficient Government—donut holes are costing Forest Acres lots of money through lost property tax revenue. Revenue from SCE&G (now Dominion) via franchise fees will decrease in 2019 due to legislative pressure to lower rates. Business licenses and various fees make up the rest. What is the right mix of revenue to fund our city?

  • Public Safety—crime is on the rise. Several events this year have caused great concern in our community. Also, speeding on residential streets has become a significant public safety issue for all residents, but especially our children.

  • Common Sense Development—Forest Acres is a desirable place to work and live. It will attract development. We need to ensure all development is balanced against community needs, tax base enhancement, and livability concerns.

  • Holding Columbia accountable; for services provided to Forest Acres. Why do we have constantly running hydrants in our community? Why are bypass valves on water meters? Who is asking the right questions to get answers?
